HOW TO WASH

Cashmere doesn’t like sun, heat and soap (I know full grown people like that). However, we’ll let cashmere off – the sun will affect the colour, heat will make it shrink and soap will felt the fibres.

The very best way to refresh your cashmere is to hang it somewhere light and airy – and only wash when you really need to. It’s better for the cashmere and the environment. But – when it really needs it – here’s the best way.

1.

PREPARE

Clean the washbasin of any detergent and random stuff in the plughole. Fill the basin with cool water.

2.

SOAP

Dilute a pea-sized amount of Baby Shampoo into the water then submerge the jumper.

3.

SQUEEZE

Gently squeeze the sweater concentrating on cuffs and collar and under the arms. After 5 minutes, squeeze the water from the jumper, and rinse three or four times in fresh cool water until it runs clear.

4.

ROLL

Roll the sweater in a towel then dry flat.

LOVE YOUR CASHMERE,

LONGER

When you return your Baker Miller Pink jumper back to us – hopefully in a few year’s time, once you’ve worn it to death – we will recycle it into fresh new yarn. Recycled yarn is hard to find and expensive. It wasn’t until I tried to do recycling myself that I discovered that most cashmere sweaters contain polyester, even if it states on the label that it’s 100% cashmere. Elastane gets knitted into the cuffs and rib, to give extra spring, and the seams are sewn up with polyester thread. This is an industry norm. So most cashmere sweaters have to have the seams and ribs removed before they can go through the recycling process. (You can’t have any synthetics in the mix). This of course adds to the rarity and cost.
We hope that by refusing to use polyester AT ALL in our Baker Miller Pink sweaters, we can reset the industry standard and encourage other brands to think about recycling before they begin creating. All brands need to consider the entire life cycle of each garment they create in order that we don’t contribute to landfill. This is not a ‘nice to have’, this is necessary. A new law demanding that suppliers take responsibility for their waste was passed through the European Parliament in July 25.

At Baker Miller Pink, we want to leave the world in a good place, so please do return your old jumpers – we will give you a discount on your next sweater when you do.
