It's Cashmere Like It Used To Be

It's Cashmere Like It Used To Be

Here’s my best cashmere memory. It was sunset, on a beach, I think in Portugal. Probably Portugal. My son, then aged three, had spent the day jumping waves and throwing sand in everyone’s eyes, his skin warm and glowing, covered in specks of glistening salt. He was not far off either keeling over with exhaustion or throwing a tantrum when a chill breeze whipped off the sea and suddenly he was “Warrrrghhh,” cold. He waddled up the beach, furious, wailing, and I snuggled him up in my cardigan. My favourite cashmere cardigan. A taupe coloured oversized boyfriend cardigan that was a present from my mum and cost a lot. We stayed another half hour, watching as the sky and sea turned inky blue, until he fell asleep.

My favourite cashmere cardigan became his favourite cashmere cardigan. He wouldn’t give it up. It went down to his feet and the sleeves were so long he could twirl them round and round like windmills. My favourite cashmere cardigan, and his.

I started Baker Miller Pink our of utter disillusionment with the cashmere industry.

It seems to me that today, cashmere is either eye-wateringly expensive and just-not-the-quality-it-used-to-be, or cheap as chips and crap.

That favourite cardigan is actually doing better than the one I bought last year, from the same brand, that cost a fortune, and already feels scratchy. And another one I got from you-know-where, the chain that does all of the colours at fast-fashion prices, it turned into a snowball of pilling within a week.

So my big idea was, create a brand that makes cashmere that feels like cashmere used to feel, and not at daft prices.

But I needed even more than that. I wanted a transparent supply chain that ensured the welfare of goats and the environment as well as the livelihoods of the herders and factory workers. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s definitely worth spending a bit more just to know, for certain, that the people making our clothes are being fairly treated and properly paid.

So Baker Miller Pink was born – 13 styles, 6 colours, best quality cashmere that feels like proper cashmere and lasts a long time.

Best quality cashmere means 100% Mongolian cashmere, no blends, no shortcuts, no funny stuff. Every piece from Baker Miller Pink is spun from Grade A, long-staple yarn that resists pilling, produced in small runs to avoid waste, and kept pure so it’s 100% recyclable through our take-back program.

It's all about the goats, cared for by certified herders in Inner Mongolia, where respect for the animals and the land comes first. From there, skilled knitters bring each style to life, so every stitch carries a little love (and a lot of accountability).

I hope this sweater shows you what we stand for; timeless, well-made cashmere that’s designed to be worn, loved, and last for years. And when it’s more holes than it is sweater, you can return it to use to be recycled into fresh new yarn.

Thank you for reading, thanks for caring, thanks for wearing our stuff and being part of our mission to bring back real cashmere.

And by the way, the Boyfriend Cardigan in our collection, in sand-coloured, 100% Inner Mongolian cashmere, is just like the one from the beach. It’ll always be a favourite. And my son’s.
