SUSTAINABILITY

Is Baker Miller Pink Cashmere sustainable?

Baker Miller Pink Cashmere yarn is made by our manufacturing facility that holds the following certifications:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
  • SFA (Sustainable Fibre Alliance)
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100

These certifications support environmental responsibility, fibre traceability, and social compliance.

Where does Baker Miller Pink Cashmere come from?

The fibre originates in Inner Mongolia, where herding families have been raising goats for centuries. Todays digital technology allows the goats to be monitored at all times resulting in healthier, happier goats.

  • Goats naturally grow a soft undercoat during harsh winters (often -20°C).
  • In spring, the fibre is combed (not shorn) as goats shed naturally.
  • Grade A fibres are separated carefully from shorter fibres.

The fibre is then processed in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, where it is sorted, dehaired, spun, and finished before becoming a garment.

Vertical integration allows:

  • Fewer intermediary steps
  • Guaranteed traceability
  • Consistent quality control

Older jumpers are recycled through sister brand Bee&Sons, giving garments a second life.

Should I buy Scottish cashmere instead?

Scottish mills have a long heritage of finishing and weaving expertise. However, all raw cashmere fibre globally originates from Mongolia or neighbouring regions. Scotland does not have native cashmere goats. The weather there is not extreme enough to cause the goats to grow the extra, supersoft layer of hair.

So whether a garment is finished in Scotland or Inner Mongolia, the fibre has already travelled from Mongolia.

What matters most is:

  • Fibre grade (micron and length)
  • Manufacturing integrity
  • Supply chain transparency

Instead of asking where it was made, ask What grade of cashmere was used?

WASHING & CARE

Can I machine wash cashmere?

Yes, but only if you’re confident your washing machine has a reliable wool or delicate cycle.

Some people machine wash their Baker Miller Pink Cashmere on a cold wool cycle with a very low spin, using a tiny amount of baby shampoo. That said, many high-end brands still recommend dry cleaning or hand washing only.

If you’re unsure about your machine, hand washing is always the safest option. Cashmere is an investment. It’s not worth risking a shrinking or stretching disaster.

How do I hand wash cashmere properly?

Hand washing cashmere is simple and gentle:

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (never hot).
  2. Add a very small amount of baby shampoo or cashmere wash and dissolve it fully.
  3. Submerge the jumper and gently squeeze the water through, never rub or wring.
  4. Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
  5. Press out excess water by rolling it inside a clean towel.
  6. Reshape and lay flat to dry.

Never hang wet cashmere, the shoulders will stretch out of shape.

Hand washing helps preserve the softness and longevity of Baker Miller Pink Cashmere and any high-quality 100% cashmere knitwear.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH CASHMERE?

Not as often as you think.

Cashmere is a natural fibre that is odour-resistant and breathable, so most people wash it every 3 to 5 wears. Over-washing breaks down fibres more quickly.

Between wears, simply air it out. Washing less often is one of the best ways to extend the life of your cashmere jumper.

SHOULD I USE FABRIC SOFTENER ON CASHMERE?

No. You don’t need it.

Cashmere is naturally soft, and fabric softener can actually coat and weaken the fibres over time.

PILLING

WHY DOES CASHMERE PILL?

Pilling happens when short, loose fibres tangle together due to friction, typically under the arms, along the sides, or where a bag strap rubs.

It’s completely normal. In fact, even excellent-quality cashmere can pill at first. Lower-grade cashmere (made from shorter fibres) tends to pill more heavily and continuously.

Pilling is not automatically a sign of poor quality.

HOW DO I REMOVE PILLS FROM CASHMERE?

Use either:

  • A cashmere comb (gentlest and best long-term option), or
  • A fabric shaver/defuzzer (quicker, but requires care).

Gently brush in one direction. Never pull pills off with your fingers, this can damage the knit.

WILL CASHMERE STOP PILLING?

Usually, yes.

Most good-quality cashmere pills the most during the first few wears as loose surface fibres shed. After a few wears and washes, the garment typically settles down and pilling reduces significantly.

IDENTIFYING QUALITY

What should I look for when buying good quality cashmere?

Look for:

  • 100% Grade A Cashmere (and nothing else)
  • Fibre thickness under 15-16 microns
  • A dense, springy feel (not thin or loosely knitted)
  • Minimal transparency when held to the light

Be careful, some labels say “Grade A Cashmere” but include wool or synthetic blends. It must clearly state 100% cashmere.

All Baker Miller Pink Cashmere is made from 100% Grade A cashmere with no blends.

IS CHEAP CASHMERE WORTH BUYING?

Generally, no.

Very cheap cashmere often uses shorter, coarser fibres that:

  • Pill heavily
  • Lose shape quickly
  • Wear out within a season

Price alone doesn’t guarantee quality. Always check for Grade A fibre and 100% content.

HOW CAN I SPOT FAKE CASHMERE?

Check the label inside the garment first. By law, it must say 100% cashmere if that’s what it is.

You can also test:

  • Burn test (on a loose thread only): Real cashmere smells like burning hair and produces white smoke and crushable ash. Synthetics produce black smoke, melt into lumps and smell like chemicals.
  • Warmth test: Real cashmere warms quickly in your hand. Synthetic fibres stay cool.

STORAGE & MOTHS

HOW SHOULD I STORE CASHMERE TO PREVENT MOTH DAMAGE?

To protect cashmere from moths:

  1. Make sure it’s clean before storing.
  2. Seal it in a zip bag.
  3. Freeze it for one week (this kills any eggs or larvae).
  4. Store folded, never hanging.
  5. Use cedar balls or lavender sachets as natural deterrents.
  6. Use moth traps if needed.

If you have an active moth problem, brands like Dr Killigan's offer non-toxic moth traps.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MOTHS DAMAGE MY CASHMERE?

For small holes, a professional knitwear repairer can often carry out nearly invisible mending.

If you suspect active moths:

  • Seal the garment in a bag.
  • Freeze for 72 hours.
  • Wash before storing again.

Act quickly. Moth damage spreads.

LONGEVITY & WEAR

How long should cashmere last?

A well-made 100% Grade A cashmere jumper, properly cared for, can last 10 to 20 years or more.

The keys are:

  • Gentle washing
  • Infrequent washing
  • Proper storage
  • Removing pills correctly

Cashmere should improve with age, not fall apart.

Is cashmere itchy?

Grade A cashmere is one of the softest natural fibres available and should not feel itchy.

If a jumper feels scratchy, it may be:

  • Lower-grade fibre (coarser microns)
  • Blended with wool
  • Harshly processed

Fine cashmere worn directly on the skin should feel comfortable and warm.

Does cashmere stretch or shrink?

Both can happen, but only if treated incorrectly.

  • Heat and agitation = shrinking
  • Hanging when wet = stretching

Wash in cold or lukewarm water, with just a tiny amount of liquid detergent (baby shampoo is fabulous) and always dry flat to prevent shrinkage and stretching.

Does cashmere last longer than wool?

It depends on quality, but high-quality cashmere can last just as long, or longer than some wool garments, if cared for properly.

Cashmere advantages:

  • Softer fibres feel more comfortable against skin
  • Good quality cashmere resists wear when made from long fibres
  • Can last 10-20 years with proper care

Wool advantages:

  • Often more durable for heavy outdoor wear
  • Better at resisting abrasion

The biggest factor is not cashmere vs wool. It’s fibre quality and how the garment is made.

How should a cashmere jumper fit?

A cashmere jumper should feel comfortable but not tight.

The ideal fit:

  • Slightly tailored through the body (not baggy or overly loose)
  • Sleeves that finish at the wrist bone
  • Enough room to move without stretching the knit

Cashmere is a soft, flexible fibre, but it can stretch if worn too loose or hung when wet. A good quality cashmere jumper should feel structured but still light and comfortable to wear.

ORDERS

What is cashmere?

Cashmere is the ultra-soft undercoat fibre grown by cashmere goats to protect themselves from freezing winter temperatures. It is finer, lighter, and significantly warmer than standard sheep’s wool.

The best quality cashmere, known as Grade A cashmere, measures under 15-16 microns in thickness, which gives it its signature softness and durability.

In short: cashmere is a natural luxury fibre prized for warmth, lightness, and comfort.

What is the difference between cashmere and wool?

Cashmere and wool are both natural fibres, but they differ in softness, warmth, and structure.

  • Cashmere fibres are much finer (under 16 microns for Grade A).
  • Cashmere is warmer for its weight.
  • Wool can feel slightly coarser depending on breed of origin. Wool fibres are more likely to repel water due to the lanolin content and make excellent outer wear.
  • Cashmere is typically lighter and more insulating.

Cashmere is generally considered more luxurious, but quality depends on fibre grade.

Is Baker Miller Pink Cashmere good quality?

Yes. Baker Miller Pink uses 100% Grade A cashmere, the highest fibre grade, with no blends.

What are the best cashmere jumpers to buy?

Look for:

  • 100% Grade A cashmere
  • Fibre thickness under 16 microns
  • Longer staple length
  • Dense knit construction

The grade of fibre matters more than the logo. Baker Miller Pink Cashmere only uses Grade A cashmere.

The best jumper would be one that is high quality, that will last a long time and represent value. 100% Grade A cashmere with no sneaky blending will look fresh longer. At Baker Miller Pink Cashmere we focus only on premium fibre and because we don’t sell in physical stores, we avoid the need to pass on expensive store overheads in the prices of our knitwear. Baker Miller Pink Cashmere is excellent value for the price because it’s very high quality.

Quality fibre and construction matter more than branding.
